Headlight glare can come from dirty glass, worn wipers, scratches, or pitting. Learn what to check and when cleaning or a chip repair is not enough.
Headlights that seem to flare across the windshield can make a Los Angeles evening drive tiring and difficult. Before assuming the glass needs replacement, check for surface film, streaking wipers, scratches, and tiny pits. These are different problems, and they do not all have the same solution.
If glare prevents you from seeing the road clearly, do not continue driving simply to finish a trip. Find a safe place to stop and arrange help. This guide offers inspection questions, not a remote judgment that your windshield is safe.
Start with clean glass and working wipers
When the vehicle is safely parked and the glass is cool, clean the windshield inside and outside with an automotive-safe glass cleaner and a clean microfiber cloth. Interior film and exterior residue can make light scatter across otherwise serviceable glass.
Inspect the wiper blades for damaged rubber and check whether they leave streaks. AAA notes that brittle blades can allow a metal wiper arm to scratch the windshield. Avoid wiping dry, dusty glass; grit can become an abrasive. Read why windshield wipers matter for clear visibility for related care tips.
If cleaning and replacing damaged blades improve the view, that does not prove every glass defect is harmless. Look again in normal daylight and ask for an inspection if marks or visibility problems remain.
Tell scratches, pitting, chips, and cracks apart
- Scratches may appear as lines or arcs, sometimes along the wiper path.
- Pitting can look like many small surface marks rather than one distinct impact.
- Chips are localized impact damage that may include a small star or crater.
- Cracks are fractures that can extend from an impact or another stressed area.
AAA explains that windshield micro-pits can reduce vision under headlights or low sunlight, and that badly pitted glass generally needs replacement. A windshield can therefore have a visibility problem even without one dramatic crack.
Do not diagnose the damage by rubbing it with a sharp object. Photos in daylight can help an initial discussion, but a technician may need to see the glass directly.
Why a chip repair may not fix scratched or pitted glass
Professional windshield chip repair treats suitable localized impact damage. It is not a resurfacing treatment for widespread pits or deep wiper scratches. Repairing one chip does not guarantee that existing headlight glare will disappear.
The location of the damage also matters. Marks in the driver's viewing area, visible distortion, and widespread wear need careful assessment. Tell the technician what you experience while driving as well as what you can see on the parked vehicle.
Avoid improvised polishing remedies
Do not use sandpaper, abrasive household products, or online polishing shortcuts on a windshield. Removing glass material can introduce optical problems, and a surface that looks shinier is not necessarily safer to look through.
Whether a superficial mark can be addressed without replacement depends on the glass and the damage. Ask for a professional assessment instead of assuming that all scratches can be polished away—or that every visible line means a new windshield is required.
Prepare for a visibility assessment in Los Angeles
Describe when the glare occurs, whether cleaning changes it, and where the marks are located. Bring your vehicle's make, model, year, VIN, and photos. Mention a camera behind the mirror, a head-up display, or other equipment that may affect replacement glass.
PG Auto Glass serves Los Angeles-area drivers from its Van Nuys shop. The team can discuss the condition of the glass and whether inspection, repair of a separate chip, or windshield replacement is the appropriate next step. Request an assessment before committing to a solution based on appearance alone. For routine prevention, use our auto glass maintenance checklist.
Will a new windshield solve all nighttime glare?
Not necessarily. Dirty glass, lighting, weather, and other visibility factors can also contribute. If the glass checks out but the problem continues, consider an eye examination and an appropriate vehicle-lighting check.
Can scratched glass be handled as a standard rock-chip repair?
Not automatically. Scratches, widespread pits, and localized impacts require different assessments. Use the booking link below to explain the visibility problem and request the next step.
