A chip or small crack creates a weak point in the windshield. Heat can cause the glass and surrounding materials to expand, while cooling creates the opposite stress.
Avoid pouring cold water on hot glass, directing extreme air conditioning at one damaged area, or closing doors forcefully when a crack is already spreading. Parking in shade may reduce temperature swings, but it will not repair the damage.
Have damage inspected quickly. A chip may qualify for repair before it spreads across the windshield and requires replacement.
